Helen Ogbu, Labour Party Candidate for Galway City East, has expressed deep concern over the ongoing neglect of some needs of elderly residents in Galway City East, particularly as they pertain to accessibility issues.
Highlighting the need for safe and dignified living conditions, Ogbu emphasized that it is unacceptable for elderly individuals, who have contributed significantly to the community, to struggle with accessibility issues in their own homes. She cites an example of one case she encountered while canvassing recently in the Mervue area, where an 80+ resident urgently requires assistance to install a ramp in front of her house for accessibility.
Despite numerous attempts to seek assistance from the local authority, the resident continues to face challenges accessing her home with a rollator. Ogbu says that requests such as these should be treated with much greater urgency and calls for immediate action to ensure the safety and well-being of elderly residents
“It is unacceptable that elderly residents are left struggling to access their own homes,” Ms Ogbu stated emphatically. Additionally, she notes that the condition of footpaths in many areas she has canvassed causes severe headaches for both old and young, posing problems for those with mobility issues and for parents trying to navigate them with buggies. “We must prioritize the needs of all members of our community, young and old, and especially of the elderly, who have contributed so much over the years”, she says.
Ms Ogbu also notes that she has received requests from elderly residents for assistance during voting days, particularly for those with mobility issues who require support with voting. She emphasises the importance of providing proper information and awareness to senior citizens, either directly or through agencies and community groups working with the elderly.
“As a candidate for Galway City East, I am committed to ensuring that everyone in our community is accorded a decent and dignified living,” Ogbu reiterated. “Residents, especially the elderly, deserve to live comfortably and safely in their homes, free from the burden of dilapidated infrastructure and where the most basic needs such as easy access to their homes is provided promptly and efficiently.”
Helen Ogbu pledges to advocate for the welfare of everyone especially the elderly and vulnerable in the community. She envisions a community where everyone can live with dignity, a sense of ownership, and well-being, regardless of their housing situation or age.
