The new Galway City Council must, as a matter of priority, address the serious issue of Galway's traffic gridlock." Galway City West Sinn Féin candidate Cathal Ó Conchúir has said.
Early morning delays and congestion have now reached an unacceptable norm in all parts of the city and environs, he said.
"You simply cannot travel from Barna in the west of the city to Parkmore in the east without having to go through the bottleneck of the city centre," said Mr Ó Conchúir.
"The need for an outer ring road has never been so urgent now. This will effectively bleed non-essential traffic from the city centre area, allowing more discussion around innovative solutions to take place to alleviate any ongoing gridlock.
"From then we can focus on a Light Rail System or a Park and Ride service or whatever, bearing in mind the environment and Galway's unique heritage."
