Fianna Fail councillors call for €70 million investment in Galway roads

A €70 million investment in Galway City Roads has been called for by a group of Fianna Fail city councillors and candidates including Peter Keane, Alan Cheevers, John Connolly, Michael Crowe and Josie Forde, Fianna Fáil Candidate in the Galway City Central LEA.

They have requested this urgent investment in Galway City’s Road infrastructure over the next five years. The Fianna Fáil local election team highlighted, in a letter addressed to Minister Jack Chambers, Minister for State with responsibility for transport, the urgent need for a significant allocation of €70 million over the next five years to upgrade nine key roads across the city.

These roads, including Ballymoneen Road, Cappagh Road, and Bothar an Choiste, are deemed essential for enhancing multi-modal transport options facilitating much-needed housing development as identified by Galway City Council.

“Minister Chambers has always been pro-active in assisting Galway City and I have already had positive feedback from him on our request,” stated Cllr Peter Keane.

“For instance, in Knocknacarra and Rahoon, the upgrading of the Ballymoneen Road, Clybaun Road, and Rahoon Road are critical from a road safety viewpoint.”

Cllr Keane says it is also essential to “enable further Housing Developments in those areas on a sustainable basis that ensures we do not overwhelm our road network and provide for active travel options across Galway City.”

The urgency of these road issues were also emphasised by Fianna Fáil Candidate for Galway City Central Josie Forde, who said the condition of these roads is not only inconvenient, but poses serious risk to the safety of our community. We urgently need investment to address these concerns,” she said.
