The development of O’Sullivan Park in Mervue as an amenity for the community should be taken a step further, according to Galway City Councillor Declan McDonnell.
The independent councillor, who is seeking re-election in the Galway City East electoral area on June 7, said that one of the areas of the facility that needs attention is the part of the park which used to be a tennis/basketball court many years ago but which has fallen into disrepair and has been unused for decades.
“I have heard a number of suggestions for this area, that it could be brought back into use as a tennis court and/or basketball court, or transformed into a lovely play area for kids.
“One of the suggestions made to me is that the area could be developed as a cycling pump track — which is essentially like a skatepark for bikes — and this would be a first for Galway and maybe one worth considering.”
Councillor McDonnell said that O’Sullivan had been coming more and more into use by the public in recent years, with the development of walkways around the park — sponsored by Medtronic and Galway City Council —is attracting more than a thousand walkers every week.
“This is a great neighbourhood park facility that is really coming into its own now, and Galway City Council recently secured a Government grant of €220,000 towards getting even more lighting installed around it.
“I am delighted that work on installing the lights has started in the past few days, so that walkers will enjoy the benefit of extended lighting for next winter,” added Cllr McDonnell.
