Former president Mary Robinson to speak on climate justice

The opening concert of the 2024 Cellisimo series will feature the National Symphony Orchestra performing alongside a star-studded cast at Leisureland, Salthill, on Saturday, May 18, including an address by Mary Robinson.

Celebrating ‘Songs of Travel’, the event will feature a world premiere of the brand-new concerto by Djuro Zivkovic for cello, piano and orchestra, performed by Swedish cellist Jakob Koranyi and Music for Galway’s artistic director, pianist Finghin Collins.

German cellist Alban Gerhardt will interpret Shostakovich’s momentous Second Cello Concerto, written in 1966 in the Crimea by the Russian composer.

Former President of Ireland and Chair of the Elders Mary Robinson will give an address on climate justice, while conductor Martyn Brabbins will wrap up proceedings with Mendelssohn’s ‘Calm Seas and Prosperous Voyage’.
