Much of the new season novelty has already worn off as Galway United find themselves in a tight fight in the Premier Division.
However, there is still a sense of occasion in welcoming Damien Duff and his side to Eamonn Deacy Park. Shels will travel without the backing of their supporters after they were slapped with a ban following the unsavoury scenes at their recent game against Drogheda United.
There will therefore be a minor advantage for the home team who will need to seize on every positive as they entertain the league leaders. Shels have stuttered after their scintillating start to the season.
Despite being 5 points clear, they are winless in three after draws against Derry and Drogheda, which preceded last Friday’s loss in the North Dublin Derby against Bohemians.
United meanwhile earned a creditable draw in the RSC against Waterford. It was another strong defensive performance from John Caulfield’s men, now the meanest defence in the country.
On the rare occasion that Killian Brouder and company coughed up any chances at all, ‘keeper Brendan Clarke was on hand. He made two big saves to earn another vital clean sheet.
Conor McCormack turned in another stellar performance while David Hurley also impressed in midfield. Wassim Aouachria got more minutes under his belt and can be a big addition to United’s attacking options.
However, the initial focus will be on the defence. They will likely need to be similarly miserly tomorrow night as Shels do not give up by way of chances either.
In the previous encounter between the sides, only a moment of magic from Will Jarvis could prise an opening.
United should take comfort from their level of performance that evening in Tolka Park and hope that they can create the conditions for a big performance and result in Terryland.
