Cllr Peter Keane

Fianna Fáil councillor for Salthill, has Peter Keane expresses his gratitude and appreciation for the formal support and endorsement of Council Colleagues for his motion to support Salthill Knocknacarra GAA Club.

At last Monday’s Galway City Council meeting a unanimous backing was given to Councillor Keane’s Motion proposing that Galway City Council allocates €250,000 over a five-year period to the Salthill Knocknacarra GAA club for the development of club facilities at its Dr Mannix Road Sports Facility.

This significant financial commitment is earmarked for the development of the club’s facilities at the Prairie on Dr Mannix Road, Salthill, including the development of a full-size 4G Astro playing facility with ancillary floodlights. This funding initiative mirrors Galway City Council’s previous investments in other local clubs and council facilities within the Galway City West Local Electoral Area including facilities at Cappagh Park and Drom. It also paves the way for a top-tier sports facility in the heart of Salthill.

The Salthill Knocknacarra GAA Club, renowned for its inclusive community spirit and promotion of Gaelic Games across all genders and ages is set to benefit significantly from this funding.

Cllr Keane confirmed to his colleagues that the project is different to many others in that it is “shovel ready” for development to commence with immediate effect having secured planning permission in recent months, and promises to serve the 2,800 members of the local community, fostering sports and recreational activities throughout the year.

He clarified that the funding for the GAA club will be provided independently of any financial resources allocated for the proposed land acquisition for an active travel project planned on Dr Mannix Road adjacent to the club’s facility at the Prairie. This distinction ensures that both projects can progress effectively, enhancing community infrastructure and promoting an integrated approach to development and wellness but builds a meaningful basis by which the Council can work collaboratively with the club over the next few years such as delivering active travel projects across Salthill and Knocknacarra.

Furthermore, in his ongoing efforts to secure additional support for the Club Cllr Keane is scheduled to meet with Minister for Sport, Thomas Byrne later this week.

The discussion will focus on advocating for the Club’s Application under the Sports Capital Grant programme seeking additional funding. These combined financial resources will significantly contribute to the club’s ambitious development plan, enhancing Salthill’s sporting landscape and ensuring a high-quality facility equipped with a comprehensive traffic plan.
