Lough Corrib Navigation Trustees recently appointed Clear Seas Aqua Ltd, to install a hydrocurtain on the Eglinton Canal at Ravens Terrace, beside Wolf Tone Bridge.

This is a pioneering initiative, a first of its kind in Ireland, aimed at removing rubbish particularly plastic from entering the sea. This initiative was proposed by Cllr Frank Fahy as Chair of the Lough Corrib Navigation Trustees.

The Hydrocurtain Project utilises cutting-edge hydrodynamics to create a barrier beneath the water’s surface, diverting rubbish and plastic waste to a waste collection point on the Canal Bank, which is emptied on a regular basis. This helps minimise rubbish and plastic from entering the River Corrib and the Atlantic Ocean.

Structured into three key phases – Data Collection, Implementation, and Running – the project will gather essential data on the types and volumes of rubbish in the canal.

Councillor Frank Fahy, welcomed the project, saying the Hydrocurtain Project is a testament to Lough Corrib Navigation Trustees’ efforts in environmental protection and sustainability.
