Honda was the most reliable car manufacturer in 2023, according to new research from Warranty Solutions Group (WSG ) in Britain.

WSG analysed more than 500 warranties sold for each of the UK’s top 15 by-volume car manufacturers (all popular used car brands in Ireland ), across vehicles three- to eight-years-old, between 2022 and 2023.

Honda had a claim rate of 4.18 per cent last year, with battery replacements the most common issue across the Japanese marque's models. These made up 20 per cent of all claims.

Toyota was the second most reliable car manufacturer with a claim rate of 4.44 per cent. Starter motors and solenoids were the most common issues for Toyota (5.66% ).

Ignition coils were the most common fault for Hyundai models (7.45% ) last year, with the brand the third most reliable car manufacturer in 2023 (8.36% ), according to WSG.

The Honda Jazz, Toyota Yaris and Toyota Aygo were the three most reliable used models from WSG’s research.

On the other end of the scale, Volkswagen (13.38% ), Fiat (13.08% ), Citroen (12.83% ) and Mercedes-Benz (12.75% ) had the highest claim rates of the 15 manufacturers.

The most common claims for Volkswagen were ABS wheel speed sensors, alternators and water pumps. The most common claims for Fiat were alternators, clutch master cylinders and ignition coils.

BMW had the largest number of models in the line-up (the X3, X1 and 2 Series ), but the average claim cost for the 2 Series was the highest out of the 20 models selected by WSG. Automatic transmission, timing chains and torque converters were amongst the highest claims for the 2 Series.

The 15 car manufacturers are (in order ): Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, Kia, Skoda, Nissan, Renault, BMW, Ford, Mini, Seat, Mercedes-Benz, Citroen, Fiat and Volkswagen.
