Out of control dogs have wreaked havoc on farm animals and farm incomes across Galway, according to Independent councillor Geraldine Donohue.

The Independent councillor said that “Galway farmers have been calling for action on this issue for years”.

Cllr Donohue has welcomed the appointment of former Garda assistant commissioner John Twomey to head up a new national stakeholder group on dog control.

“Dogs out of control have wreaked havoc and destruction on farm animals and farm incomes, it’s about time the issue was given national priority for too long local councils have been asked to tackle the issue without adequate resources, hopefully this national initiative will be fully resource to tackle the problem head on!”

“I welcome Minister Humphreys’ plans and her proposals to include representatives from the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA ) and I call on the Minister to include some Galway councillors on the new national stakeholder group,” said Cllr Donohue.
