Mayor of Galway City, Eddie Hoare has welcomed a commitment by Galway City Council to upgrade a number of junctions on rural backroads in Galway City.
Works commenced last week on improved road markings and signage at the Upper Clybaun Road/Rahoon Road junction and further works are planned this junction and the Letteragh Road/Tonabrucky junction in the coming weeks.
“We’ve seen lots of developments progressed on the backroads and the developers have progressed the footpaths, road widening and road markings as required under planning,” said Mayor Hoare.
“This is most welcome. Galway City Council have also committed to improving a number of these key junctions. Circular Road, Ballagh Road, Rahoon Road, Letteragh Road, Mincloon and other areas all should have footpaths and lighting and safer infrastructure installed at junctions.
“Schemes are now being progressed in these areas and this is a very positive development,” he added.
He said that a number of these roads have been included in the recently commissioned multi modal transport project where consultants have been appointed to progress plans for improved infrastructure and he expects a programme of works to be prepared in the coming months. “Consultants have been appointed and we will hopefully have a programme of works to go out to tender by the summer. All of these key areas are used by thousands of road users on a daily basis and it’s imperative that these works are urgently progressed and prioritised.
“There have been lots of crashes at some of the junctions and this will continue if upgrades aren’t completed. I welcome the progress but we need the hard infrastructure to now follow and Galway City Council need to take the lead on it,” he concluded.
