With a number of Galway’s sport clubs still impacted by the damages caused by recent successive storms Isha and Jocelyn, Galway city Fianna Fáil councillor Peter Keane has urged the Government to establish a ‘Sports Infrastructure Relief Fund’.
The proposed relief fund should, Cllr Keane says, be given to clubs that have been affected by the ‘recent destructive weather events’. One of these clubs, the Galway Lawn Tennis Club (GLTC ) is dealing with ‘severe infrastructure damage’ of the club’s distinct outdoor dome, which was torn down by Storm Isha on January 21.
Emphasising the urgent need for financial assistance to aid the swift restoration and resuming of services, Cllr Keane said, “The impact of Storms Isha and Jocelyn has left many sports clubs, including Galway Lawn Tennis Club, grappling with severe infrastructure damage. These clubs play a vital role in our community, fostering physical well-being and community spirit. It is crucial that we provide them with the necessary support to recover and continue serving our residents.”
According to Cllr Keane, by establishing this fund the Government would be ‘emphasising its importance in safeguarding the future of local sports organisations’.
“It is our responsibility to ensure that these clubs, which contribute immensely to our community’s well-being, receive the support they need to overcome the challenges posed by recent storm events. I have called upon my colleagues in Government to act swiftly and create the Sports Infrastructure Relief Fund to assist clubs like Galway Lawn Tennis Club in their recovery efforts.”
