Advice for prospective new students from current students at University of Galway

Moving away for university is a huge, sometimes slightly scary step. Especially for those of us who grew up in a different part of the country, moving away from family and friends can feel rather daunting. I found making new friends to share this experience with is the best way of overcoming any anxieties I had. Here, I can offer a few tips on how to make friends when moving away from home.

My first piece of advice would be to attend open days where you can, but especially the introductory week for first years. Not only will this offer you a snippet of what to expect from courses on offer, but you’ll be amazed at how quickly fellow students are keen to interact and get to know you. From silent discos to BBQ’s there are countless (mostly free ) activities for you to simply enjoy in this new journey and is the perfect environment to meet new people!

Clubs and societies are also another great way to meet new people. Whether you’re into creative writing, athletics, even speaking Irish, there will be a society for you. Here, you will meet new people who already share a common interest with you. Most society members will likely be in a different course from you, which can be great later during the semester to meet for a coffee and chat about life outside of study.

Something I found very worthwhile was taking part in the voluntary initiatives at the University, such as the Student Ambassador Programme or Seas Suas. Most of these will command teamwork, which can be brilliant for building new relationships while also aiding your own development.

There is no shortage of ways to meet new people and forge new friendships. But one final piece of wisdom would be, remember you’re not alone. Most other students will have come from afar to study and will feel exactly the same as you do. Going out and networking is the first part and after, you’ll be amazed at how quickly you won’t feel lonely anymore!
