Lanah Acton

University of Galway student

University of Galway provides to students a unique and advantageous immersion in the University experience. My name is Lanah and I’m a second year student of Sociology, Political Science and Psychology. I absolutely love my programme and studying the social sciences. When I think of how someone can make the most out of any experience, I think of engagement, of saying yes to experiences and adapting a mindset of curiosity and excitement about the abundant opportunities we are surrounded by, especially here at the University of Galway. When I had just begun college, a colleague and former student of the University mentioned something that has remained in my mind since; that he regretted not engaging more with university life. These years can be incredibly busy and thus move quickly, and so I decided to adapt a simple approach of saying yes more to what is around me. Why not? It may sound repetitive to hear but our University and Galway city itself offers so many outlets to fill your time usefully, express who you are and importantly cultivate the adult you wish to become; arguably the focus of your undergraduate years.

Having lived in Galway my whole life, what stands out to me about living and studying here is the welcoming disposition of Galwegians. As a class representative for my course, the lecturing, teaching and administrative staff are incredible when it comes to listening to the voices of students in professional yet pragmatic ways. They genuinely care about our experiences and feedback. The same can be said for all staff and students I have come into contact with; we truly have a remarkable and unique sense of community and understanding. Voted as the world’s most friendliest city (Travel + Leisure Magazine ), Galway truly is such a unique and heart-warming city. Spend a day here and you will see creativity and charm glowing from every café, gallery, restaurant, bookshop and cosy side street that leads to yet another charismatic pub bursting with live music and laughter. Galway has a profound and rare sense of community, and our University offers a vibrant and fulfilled student life unique to other colleges. There really is never a monotonous moment in Ireland’s Capital of culture. I am proud to be a Galway girl and to be a spokesperson for my home!

I can personally vouch for University of Galway’s excellent range and scope of academic programmes, and would encourage any CAO applicant to explore these wonderful options. Our University can offer you a degree and experience that I believe you can thrive in, with incredible international links for Erasmus+, Study Abroad and placement options, useful student support services, an infinite list of societies to join, and a multitude of ways to stand out in the professional world. Being a CÉIM leader and pursuing the Employability Award are just two of these options. Overall, the goal is to feel content and achieved in what you decide to pursue in your life, and I know University of Galway can offer you the first step towards this.
