Council to progress plan for floodlighting on Westside Running Track

Fianna Fáil City Councillor John Connolly has welcomed confirmation from Galway City Council that plans to erect floodlighting on the running track in Westside will be progressed this spring.

He said it has been the objective of the Council to progress this project for some time.

“The track is a great community facility and the development of floodlighting will provide opportunity for patrons to use the facility later into the evening.”

“The running track has become an important part of the sporting landscape in the west of the city and is used widely by athletes preparing for competition but also by people enjoying the facility for passive recreational purposes.”

Cllr Connolly said that the National Sports Plan places a special emphasis on the importance of sports facilities.

“While the recently agreed Local Economic and Community Plan aims to provide increased participation in sports and physical activity that leads to an increase in participation in sport, physical activity, and active lifestyles across all communities, with a particular focus on people who are economically or socially disadvantaged, educationally disadvantaged or who have a disability.”

“Officials in the Recreational and Amenity section of the council have advised that the Part 8 planning documents will be published later in the spring. The proposal will then go on public display and submissions will be invited from the public.

“Galway City Planners will then provide a report of their assessment of the project which will include their response to the public submissions. The project will then be voted on by the elected council. I would expect City planners to place a condition on the latest time by which the lights can be used,” he said.
