Savannah O'Callaghan Tuam AC on her way to gold in the U20 3000 Walk

Galway athletes struck gold at the National U20 and U23 Track and Field Indoor Championships held last weekend in Athlone.

In the U20 400m, Galway athletes completed a clean sweep, with David Mannion of South Galway holding claiming gold, just ahead of clubmate Stephen Mannion, with Sean Doggett of Athenry finishing strongly for bronze.

In the Race Walk, Savannah O Callaghan of Tuam won a famous gold, as she led from start to finish to win the U20 3K Walk, with her clubmate Matthew Newell taking the Men’s title. Up and coming Conor Penney from Craughwell cleared 1 metre 95 to win the U20 Men’s High Jump.

Darragh Fahy from Loughrea pulled off a sensational gold medal victory in the U20 Men’s Triple Jump as his first jump of 12 metres 52 proved too good for the rest of the field.

Liam Shaw from Athenry took silver in the Men’s U20 Shot Put and bronze in the Weight throw.

GCH Athletes Andrew Egan and Daniel Songodele won individual medals, Egan over 200m at U23 level, with Songoldle winning bronze in the U20 Triple Jump

GCH U23 Relay team claimed bronze via Songodele, Jack Kinane, Robert Urquhart and Andrew Egan, to complete a great medal haul from across the county .

Galway Women’s Mini Marathon

The Galway Women’s Mini Marathon 10k event to celebrate the St-Brigid’s bank holiday takes place Monday 5th February in Craughwell at 10.30 am. Race entry is available on popupraces.ie
