Free psoriasis information days in Ballinasloe and Gort

Psoriasis patients in Galway are invited to attend either of two free Psoriasis Information days next Wednesday July 1.

Psoriasis patients can visit Murphy’s Pharmacy, Ballinasloe between 10.30am and 12.30pm or Quinn’s Pharmacy, Gort between 2pm and 4.30pm. Dermatology nurse Caroline Kennedy will host the morning and afternoon sessions and explain the different types of psoriasis, management of the condition and compliance with treatments.

Between two to three per cent of the population, or 100,000 people have psoriasis, and an estimated 4,600 people throughout the city and county have the condition.

Psoriasis is a chronic, incurable skin disease, characterised by dry, red patches and thick silvery scales on the skin that are extremely itchy, leading to scratching and bleeding. It can be extremely painful. Many patients suffer from low self esteem.

While the condition is incurable people should not suffer in silence, but visit their doctor or dermatologist as there are very good treatments available, according to the Psoriasis Association of Ireland.
