Call for fresh film-making talent

Applications are open for the 2024 Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of The Year awards.

Fresh International Film Festival is inviting budding movie-makers aged seven to 18 to submit their creations before deadline on 19 January.

Organisers say anything and everything is welcome, including comedy, horror, drama, documentary, experimental, music video, and animation.

“As we go into our 28th festival, the anticipation and thrill are as vibrant as ever. It’s always wonderful to see emerging young filmmakers share their unique stories and pioneering film techniques,” says Fresh founder and artistic director. Jayne Foley.

Dublin student Max Hendrickson (17 ) was named Ireland's Young Filmmaker of the Year 2023 at the Fresh International Film Festival. His short animated film, The Tell-Tale Heart is a re-telling of Edgar Allan Poe’s famous Gothic murder story.

The 28th annual Fresh International Film Festival will take place in April next year. Its Young Filmmaker of the Year awards programme acknowledges and celebrates youth filmmaking across three categories: Junior (7-12 years ), Senior (13-18 years ) and International (7-18 years ).

The awards include a prize fund, filmmaking equipment, mentoring sessions with creative professionals, and the opportunity for young people to have their work screened theatrically. Submissions are also considered for specialist awards including the Radharc Trust Award for heritage and documentary, the RTÉ 60 Second Award, and the RTÉ Factual Award, Best Animation, and Best Performance, along with the much-coveted peer-to-peer Audience Award.

Closing date for entries is Friday, January 19.
