Labour Candidate for Galway City East, Helen Ogbu has condemned the arson incident in Rosscahill, Galway, and call for collective action against bigotry.

Speaking to the Advertiser, she said that the recent arson incident targeting the former Ross Lake House Hotel in Rosscahill, Galway, designated to accommodate 70 asylum seekers, has sent shockwaves through our community.

"This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the bigotry present in certain segments of our society, fuelled by passivity and, regrettably, even support from individuals in positions of authority.

"As a community, we must address this issue head-on and take collective action to prevent further acts of intolerance and hatred. I am appalled at statements from local councillors that seek to justify the destruction. The focus needs to be on those who engaged in these criminal acts, and those whose rhetoric has encouraged fear and bigotry," she said.

Ms Ogbu, Labour Party Candidate for Galway City East, said these actions are utterly unacceptable.

"I find solace in the knowledge that voices of intolerance, though loud, represent a minority. My sincere hope is that every member of our community feels welcomed, included, and safe in Galway."

However, recognizing the urgency of the situation, Ms Ogbu emphasised that words alone are insufficient.

"It's crucial that we take collective action against bigotry wherever we encounter it, preventing it from gaining any further footholds in our neighbourhoods." Now, more than ever, it is important that we show solidarity with those who come to our shores seeking refuge,"she said.

Helen Ogbu extends her unwavering support to the community affected by this incident and emphasizes that the Labour Party stands in solidarity with all individuals impacted.

"Together, let's stand up against intolerance and work towards a Galway community where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected," she concluded.
