Local Councillor Martina Kinane has welcomed Minister Darragh O’Brien's announcement of 20m for the development of new wastewater treatment plants in both Clarinbridge and Craughwell.

Since she was first elected in 2014, Cllr Kinane has been advocating for the provision of a collective waste water treatment system for Clarinbridge and since 2019 for neighbouring village Craughwell.

"The inadequacy of waste water treatment facilities in Clarinbridge and Craughwell is stifling development and threatening the environment," she believes.

"Young people and families should have the right to build their own homes in villages like Clarinbridge and Craughwell , areas they grew up in, send their children to school that they themself attended, and eligible to play for their local sports clubs and organisation into the future”

Craughwell and Clarinbridge had been submitted by Galway County Council as areas eligible under the scheme’s housing and environmental criteria.

Cllr Kinane acknowledges the huge effort put in by Galway County Council, Rural Water Division and is thankful to Minister Darragh OBrien for noting her concerns regarding the native oysters, economic future of both villages and the importance of equitable rural investment “

However, she believes it is paramount that proper planning rules are adhered to and the built heritage of Clarinbridge and Craughwell retained.
