The Galway Arts Centre is in dire need of a multi-million renovation, according to City Council officials.
Estimates of up to €8m were suggested at a meeting of the Galway City Council on Monday.
The protected, cut-stone townhouse on Dominic Street may require a new roof, renovation of its upper floors, sensitive conservation of historic plasterwork, and installation of an elevator. It is understood the City Council is planning to access Civic Society grants from the €1bn Shared Island Fund to pay for the refurbishment.
47 Dominick Street was originally built in the 1840s for the Persse whiskey family, and was a home of cultural revivalist Lady Gregory of Coole Park.
Meanwhile, a row of long-empty properties near Merchants Road in Galway city centre is set to receive a facelift.
Galway City Council’s Arts Office has confirmed it has engaged artists to paint a giant mural along a terrace of derelict properties along Lower Merchants Road and New Dock Street, including a prominent gable. Thought to be mostly empty for almost a decade, the row of nineteenth century homes face the rear of the House Hotel.
