Grey has been Ireland’s most popular car colour for the past seven years, with 38,489 grey cars sold here in 2022 alone. And according to the latest Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI ) figures, grey will continue to dominate the Irish car colour palette for the next year.
However, one such car brand that will no longer be making up those numbers is Fiat, who has said it will stop producing grey cars.
Stellantis, the automotive firm that owns the Italian car maker, said the decision to scrap the popular colour was made to “enhance the importance of colours in life” and to reaffirm the brand’s new ‘Dolce Vita’ value.
This decision makes Fiat the first car brand to stop producing grey cars, starting with the new Fiat 600e, an electric crossover set to arrive in Ireland early next year.
From now on, the colours in the present and future Fiat line-up are inspired by “the Italian sea, sun, earth and sky”, according to Stellantis.
Olivier Francois, Fiat’s chief executive (pictured in the 600e ), said the move is “challenging and disruptive” and is aimed to further reinforce the Italian car maker as the brand of “joy, colours, and optimism”.
