Galway has become the first city in Ireland to complete the rollout of LED lighting, leading to an annual saving of approximately €600,000, Senator Pauline O’Reilly said this week.
The Green Party Senator commended Galway City Council this week for its work in switching to the energy efficient bulbs, which have yielded a 64 per cent reduction in energy use from lighting for the local authority while also helping to reduce carbon emissions.
The rollout, which began four years ago, is part of a national effort among local authorities to reduce energy consumption and help fight climate change.
“It’s great to see Galway lighting the way on climate action,” Sen O’Reilly said. “Galway City Council have to be commended for being the first to complete the rollout of LED street lights.
“The change to low energy lighting is clearly a win-win – lowering emissions and saving a significant amount of money. Saving money on lighting means more for other projects such as park improvements, community, or sporting infrastructure.
“This is a great example of how climate action can really have a tangible benefit for everyone.”
