Ireland’s largest indigenous MedTech company, Aerogen, is the new sponsor of the University of Galway Camogie Club.
The Aerogen sponsorship runs for two years, and university president Professor Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh says it is a symbol of intent for the club.
"In building on the strength of camogie in Galway, the college club is an "important and vibrant club" in the university, contributing to participation by students in sport which is so important for student wellbeing.
“University of Galway is thrilled to see Aerogen, a company which epitomises our value of excellence, coming on board to support and sponsor our camogie team. We look forward to our camogie team capturing new glories in their cup campaigns this year, and into the future.”
John Power, founder and CEO of Aerogen, says the two-year sponsorship as part of the company's 25th anniversary celebrations.
"We were looking for unique ways to engage with our community and this sponsorship gives us the opportunity to support local sports talent. We look forward to cheering the team on and wish all the players and coaching team the very best of luck.”
University of Galway Camogie Club chairperson, Muireann O’Reilly, says the college is working hard to strengthen and grow the club and to re-establish itself at the top level of camogie.
"Membership numbers are at their highest level in recent years with the club now fielding two teams. We provide a tremendous sporting and social outlet for our students and we are delighted that Aerogen has come on board to support us.”
University of Galway Camogie Club will take to the field in the Purcell and Uí Mhaolagáin Cup competitions in the coming year. The first team competes in the Purcell Cup and the second team competes in the Uí Mhaolagáin Cup.
The teams include players from clubs across Galway, Clare, Offaly, Kilkenny, Wexford, Kildare, Limerick and Westmeath, including All-Star nominee and Galway goalkeeper Fiona Ryan, and 2022 All-Ireland medal winner with Kilkenny Tiffanie Fitzgerald.
The college club is one of the oldest clubs on campus, and has won the famed Ashbourne Cup on 14 occasions - its last success in 1994. However, in recent years, camogie has been revived, and now fields two teams.
