The Galway volunteers who travelled to Vietnam in March as part of the charity Operation Walk Ireland to help perform hip and knee replacements on patients who would otherwise not have access to this life changing surgeries.

Operation Walk was originally founded in 1996 by Dr. Larry Dorr –Los Angeles and was later established internationally by Mr. Derek Bennet consultant orthopaedic surgeon Galway Clinic when he set up the charity “ Operation Walk Ireland” in 2016.

The aim of the charity is to perform hip and knee replacements on patients who would otherwise not have access to this life-changing procedure, while at the same time providING education and supervised training to local doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and allied healthcare workers.

As volunteers they give their time and expertise free but they all have to pay their own air fare and accommodation for their time in Asia.

The first Operation Walk Ireland mission took place in May 2017 when a team of volunteers travelled to Hanoi, Vietnam and performed 64 joint replacements with their Vietnamese colleagues and developed the educational aspect of the mission.

They travelled to Hanoi in March this year with a group of surgeons, anaesthetist nurses and technicians from the four Galway hospitals as part of the 2023 Irish mission to Vietnam.

They are currently preparing for their 2024 mission and have various fundraising events taking place across Galway city and county including a table quiz in Sheridans Bar Knocknacarra on the 26th October. Any help you can give will be appreciated.
