Life from Roman times is still visible through on the streets of The Amman Citadel which dates to the Bronze age, it overlooks well preserved Roman Theatre.
Leaving the city we visited Mount Nebo, standing where Moses is said to have first seen the Promised Land and journeyed on from there to the Dead Sea.
The Jordanian side of the lake offers a more tranquil experience. An afternoon soak in the Salt waters followed by a Mud scrub will leave you feeling totally relaxed and ready for the road south.
The absolute highlight was our visit to the Lost city of Petra, dating back to around 300 BC it was the capital of the Nabatean Kingdom and home to 10,000 people.
Abandoned for more than 500 years, it was rediscovered in the early 1800’s by a Swiss Explorer and has been described as ‘one of the most precious cultural properties of man’s cultural heritage’ by UNESCO. We walked 1.2 km along the winding ‘Siq’ ,it was stunning, like wandering through the bottom of a Canyon with its towering Sandstone walls displaying carvings and tombs, a tourist attraction in its own right.
In the afternoon we visited Wadi Rum, a plateau at the edge of the Arabian Desert. Also known as the Valley of the moon, this is another protected area made famous by Lawernce of Arabia during the Arab Revolt.
Several of the Star Wars Movies were made here, aswell as the Dune and the Martian, if you have time you can spend a night in a a Martian Dome tent and watch the sunrise or the night sky.
