A very successful WEEE Recycling Event was held in University of Galway last week with 24,000kg’s of recyclable waste collected on the day. The event was attended by Deputy Mayor of Galway Cllr. Donal Lyons and there was an incredible response from the staff and students at University of Galway along with the people of Galway at large.

Cllr Lyons congratulated University of Galway on hosting this impressive event and said he was “delighted to visit the campus and see some of the great work that is going on across the university and experience first-hand the enthusiasm and motivation amongst staff and students to do the right thing when it comes to sustainability. Campaigns like these encourage more sustainable behaviour in our society”.

This recycling event formed part of the University’s inaugural Sustainable Development Goals (SDG ) week where events took place throughout the week to raise awareness amongst the community of over 20,000 students and staff and to demonstrate, by example, that everyone can make a contribution to the UN SDG’s.

Lorraine Rushe, Environmental, Health & Safety Manager at the university said it was great to see such a great turnout on the day. Events like this are a great way of giving people the opportunity to get rid of any electrical and battery waste in a safe and environmentally friendly manner.

University of Galway is deeply committed to sustainability. We will continue to be proactive in our approach to environmental sustainability, drive continuous improvement and lead the way into the future. Hosting events like this gives us an opportunity to raise awareness and educate others on the importance of disposing waste responsibly, as we know these practices are a crucial part of a successful transition to low-carbon societies”.

WEEE Ireland operates under approval from The Minister for Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment. WEEE is one of the fastest growing waste collection streams in the developed world. Waste collected via the authorised collection channels is fully traceable and is recycled to the highest EU standards.
