Homage to Russian maestro in exile

Music for Galway’s International Concert Season opens this week with celebrations of legendary romantic composer Sergei Rachmaninov in Galway City and Athenry.

Award-winning British pianist Lucy Parham and Blackadder actor Tim McInnerny present ‘A Heart In Exile’ in Galway’s Hardiman Hotel on Tuesday, September 26, and in Athenry’s Raheen Woods Hotel on Wednesday, September 27.

The evening performances concentrate on Rachmaninov’s political exile – mainly in America – having been forced from his homeland in 1918 by the Russian Revolution.

At the age of 44, Rachmaninov left Moscow for Sweden on an open sleigh, accompanied by his wife and two daughters carrying nothing but a suitcase. He was never to return – but he left his heart forever in Russia.

Parham and McInnerny will recount the Russian pianist’s life through both music and words.
