Longstanding TG4 drama series, Ros na Rún, will open its doors to the public for the first time as part of Culture Night 2023, allowing fans to visit the famous set and participate in a Q&A with a variety of the show’s stars.
Following the success of the first Culture Night last year, the countrywide celebration of the cultural contribution of the arts in Ireland will return on Friday, September 23, bringing the chance for fans of longstanding Irish language TV drama, Ros na Rún to experience the show’s magic in person.
Ahead of the Culture Night event, Series Producer, Marion Ní Loingsigh, said “We’re very excited at Ros na Rún to be part of the prestigious Culture Night Programme and it’s our first time to participate and open our TV set to Culture Night Fans. The Irish language is at the soul of Ros na Rún as is acting and creative writing all of which embellish the culture of rural Gaeltacht life. Sharing our behind the scenes tour of this very unique TV set which combines two working studios is exciting for us. We’ve come a long way and want to share our high quality production values with our loyal fans and Culture Night enthusiasts.”
Filmed at an Chuasnóg in Spiddal in the Connemara Gaeltacht, Ros na Rún is a co-production between Dánú Media and Tyrone Productions for TG4. Visitors will enjoy a sneak peak of what it’s like to be in Tigh Thaidhg, Berni’s Cúl Chaint Café and Gaudi’s where Bobbi Lee works. There will also be a visit to Máire’s B&B, Berni’s Apartment and Siopa XL Ros na Rún. Learning how a TV Drama series is created, written, filmed, edited and produced will be at the core of the Culture Night experience for Ros na Rún fans.
Following the tour, the Ros na Rún Culture Night Q&A session will be hosted by Raidio Pobail’s aspiring manager Caitriona Ní Loideáin, long established actor Máire Éilís Ní Fhlatharta and she will be joined by actors Pól Ó Gríofa who plays the now very troubled Mack. Two up and coming young stars, Colm Mac Giolla Easpaig who plays Mánus Daly and Ciara Cox – who plays Maeve in Ros na Rún, and who played the lead character in the new series Saol Ella, will also feature. Both young actors are nominated in the Young Stars for the forthcoming Gradam Cumarsáid 2023. The panel will also feature Máirín Uí Eidhin head of the scripting department at Ros na Rún. In addition Marion Ní Loingsigh, Series Producer, will also feature. Questions from how the actors got to audition, handling their story lines to how Ireland’s only Rural based TV drama series is written and created and how a series is filmed and produced on the purpose built TV set in the Connemara Gaeltacht will also feature. There will be plenty of insights, secrets shared and no doubt lots of laughs and learning.
Now in its 28th season, Ros na Rún, which translates to ‘the valley’ or ‘village of secrets’ is Ireland’s only rural based TV drama series, and has lived up to its name, delving deeply into societal issues in rural Ireland from incest, to rape, coercive control, domestic, alcohol and drug abuse and has seen its fair share of death and murders, and was a pioneering show for broadcasting the first kiss between gay characters in 1996.
