Galway City West and Knocknacarra Councillor Donal Lyons has been receiving ongoing representations from concerned parents/residents requesting the installation of a pedestrian crossing on the Cappagh Road close to the excellent Galway City Council recreation facilities at Cappagh Park. The facilities at Cappagh Park are widely and extensively used by the youth of the greater Knocknacarra area.
He said that the Lower Cappagh Road has seen an amount of housing development in the last couple of years. There are a number of new estates that have been developed resulting in increased traffic volumes in the vicinity of Cappagh Park.
Following the parents/residents requests, Cllr Lyons has submitted the following Notice of Motion to Galway City Council for discussion at the next meeting of the council.
“I request Galway City Council, Roads Department/Active Travel Department to prepare the necessary drawings and seek funding from the National Transport Authority for the provision of a lighted pedestrian (zebra ) crossing south of the roundabout on the Cappagh Road. The provision of a lighted zebra crossing at this location would make it safer for users of the Cappagh Park facilities to cross this busy road,” he said.
“The Notice of Motion is now included on the agenda for the next meeting of Galway City Council. I understand that there is ample money being made available by the National Transport Authority for Active Travel schemes. I believe that this is an ideal project to attract such funding and I am hopeful that the Notice of Motion will be supported and adopted by the members of the council,” he said.
