Claddagh Made Personal: The Tradition of Irish Jewelry Making

The intricate interlocking designs and swirling spirals of Celtic art have captivated the imagination of people the world over for centuries. In Ireland, there is an unbroken tradition, dating back millennia, of working with these deeply evocative symbols that continues up to the present day.

Irish master jewelers, gold, and silversmiths bring fresh inspiration to ancient design motifs as their skills are passed on from each generation to the next. When you order a stunning piece of jewelry online, you want to be sure that what you receive honours this tradition and is authentic in every possible way.

At Irish Craft Jewelry, we ensure that this is the case.

Designer Jewelry Worn by Ancient Royalty

Iconic designs like the triple spiral, the Celtic knot, and the triple interlaced arc date back thousands of years into Celtic prehistory. While these and other symbols are also found in cultures outside the Celtic family, it is in Ireland that their use finds its high watermark in a continuous tradition passed down through the centuries.

The Claddagh Tradition

By the standards of Irish history, Claddagh is a relatively modern innovation. While ancient treasure hoards from neolithic times continue to be discovered on the island today, the instantly recognisable Claddagh design dates back to the late 17th century.

Galway native Richard Joyce was abducted by Barbary pirates in 1675 and held in captivity for 14 years. His Turkish master, noting the young man's eye for detail and steady hand, apprenticed him as a goldsmith. It is from these inauspicious beginnings that the Claddagh tradition began.

When Joyce regained his freedom in 1689 his master offered him his daughter's hand in marriage and half his property should he remain. Nothing, however, could deter the Irishman from returning home. The story goes that he then created the first ever Claddagh ring to declare his love for his childhood sweetheart.
