Destination Tango in Black Box with Otros Aires Ensemble

INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED ‘neo-tango’ ensemble Otros Aires are in Galway’s Black Box next week where they will be joined by dancers Enrique Ringa and Marion Krauthaker of Caminos de Tango and other guests for what should be a spell-binding evening of tango music and dance.

The show, entitled Destination Tango, promises to bring the intriguing sounds of Buenos Aires to the Irish stage for the first time, capturing the essence of Argentine tango and its origins.

The Otros Aires ensemble gives traditional tango a contemporary twist, while conserving the aesthetic origins of the form. This is an outstanding crossover musical experience led by the sounds of enchanting guitar, lively percussion, the lamentations of the melancholic bandoneon, and stunning street tango performances.

Otros Aires was founded in Barcelona in 2003 by Argentine musician/architect Miguel Di Genova. The group mix the first tangos and milongas records from the beginning of the last century (by artistes like Gardel, Razzano, D’Arienzo, etc, ) with electronic sequences, melodies, and lyrics of the 21st century.

They have released three albums and toured widely throughout Europe and Latin America, garnering countless plaudits en route. The group’s current line-up features Miguel Di Genova (voice, guitar, and sequences ), Emmanuel Mayol (drums and percussion ), Omar Massa (bandoneon ), and Diego Ramos (piano ).

Enrique Ringa and Marion Krauthaker created Caminos de Tango to spread the passion for an authentic Argentinean tango experience oustide the Argentinean borders. Currently based in Ireland, their goal is to transmit their own passion for tango to a growing multicultural and multigenerational tango community through shows, performances, and workshops.

They also travel around the world to perform along with world renowned Argentinean ensembles, take part in tango shows or performances and teach at major international festivals. Enrique and Marion’s style is distinctive in their combining traditional and new elements of tango and dance.

From milonguero style in the

most traditional Argentinean form to the most modern styles of tango, their repertoire also includes contemporary dance elements and theatrical pieces. Their capacity to innovate and make their own dance evolve, undoubtedly places them among the current pioneers of tango as it evolves in the 21st century.

Supporting Ballyowen Meadows School for Children with Autism, Destination Tango is all set to take the Irish audiences by storm in this short tour, which commences in Galway’s Black Box. Galwegians will have the added enjoyment that in the Black Box as well as the seated audience, people will also be able to dance along with the music on a big dancefloor.

Destination Tango takes place on Wednesday June 24 at 8pm. Tickets are €20/15 from the Town Hall on 091 - 569777.
