Newcastle native and experienced mountain marathoner, Cathal McGrath, took on the Matterhorn Mountain in the Swiss Alps on Saturday, August 26, in aid of Galway based heart and stroke charity, Croí.
Described as one of the most challenging trail run marathons in Europe, the Matterhorn Sky Ultra is not for the faint of heart. The 49 kilometre trail is set over challenging terrain, reaching peaks of 3,600 vertical metres of ascent and descent and is outlined on the marathon’s website as a ‘contest without mercy for die hard runners’, and Cathal most certainly fits the bill, with him having specifically chosen to complete the Matterhorn Sky Ultra because of its daunting reputation.
“When I completed my first marathon, I did enjoy it, but I felt it wasn’t quite my thing so I sought out a new challenge with trail running races,” said Cathal, adding, “I chose the Matterhorn as it is known as one of the most challenging trail run marathons in Europe. The thrill of climbing up to 3000 metres in elevation and then running down it is really satisfying and the views are incredible. The glacial Lakes the waterfalls are always very special to run around.
“I really love being in nature and I am an avid amateur photographer of different landscapes and wildlife so it was natural for me to enjoy trail and mountain running more than road running.”
Having made the decision to participate in the challenging and extreme race, Cathal began the training process by completing other ultra marathons and several long runs across Ireland’s mountain ranges while battling the temperamental Irish weather.
“Overall the last year I have completed the Ultra Scotland 50km and Mont Blanc Marathon along with several long runs in various Irish peaks like the Wicklow Mountains and Slieve Donard. Battling against the Irish weather in and around its mountain peaks is great training for whatever sport you participate in.”
While Cathal’s decision to participate in the Matterhorn Sky Ultra has been driven by his love for taking part in extreme trail races, he is using the marathon to raise money for a cause near and dear to his heart.
“Croí have been really great to my parents over the years. They were a wonderful source of encouragment and motivation for my Mum especially. In general, Croí provide older people and those who have heart and stroke issues with a social and a physical outlet. They give yoga and fitness classes regularly as well as providing emergency accommodation for families whos loved ones are in hosptial and are going through some rough and painful times.
“I’ve completed several runs for Croi over the last couple of years for my own pleasure of course but also because I want to raise as much money as I can for such a good cause. Every little bit helps as they don’t receive any public funding and rely only on donations.”
