After three rounds of the senior football championship, the groups are beginning to take shape. Although no team is yet guaranteed progression to a quarter-final, or preliminary quarter-final, some teams are all but through.
Reigning champions Maigh Cuilinn look set to progress after they made it three wins from three when defeating Milltown in Duggan Park on Saturday afternoon. It is all to play for in the final two rounds in this group with Annaghdown, St James’, and Milltown all on four points.
Milltown is set to play both teams in their final two games - a win in either could go a long way to ensuring they qualify for the next round.
Naomh Anna Leitir Mor and An Spideal have both struggled in their opening games.Annaghdown’s demolition of An Spideal on Sunday sent them to the bottom of the table. St James’ continue to impress this year and with their win on Saturday, it makes it almost impossible for them to be in relegated this year, giving them a superb chance of progressing.
Corofin enjoyed their third win of the campaign on Saturday evening. Yet, after their huge win over Salthill/Knocknacarra on the opening weekend, they have looked casual in their three-point wins against Killannin and Oughterard.
Salthill/Knocknacarra have overcome that disappointing defeat and produced two wins in a row, and are starting to bring a bit of swagger back to their football with the return of Rob Finnerty. Having lost to both Salthill/Knocknacarra and Corofin, Killannin currently prop up the group, while Caherlistrane made sure of their first points with a smash-and-grab win over a Bearna side that has yet to register a win in the group. Oughterard will be happy with their campaign so far, and their game against Killanninwll possibly deciding whether they hold onto third place.
Group three threw up two draws at the weekend which will delight Claregalway, who had their bye in round three.
Tuam Stars did brilliantly to score the final six points against a St Michael’s side that looked comfortable until going two scores clear, but failed to score after the second goal.
Despite getting their first point on the board, Dunmore McHales will be slightly disappointed not to have defeated Mountbellew/Moylough. They had a chance to go two ahead in injury time, but the shot dropped short and Mountbellew/Moylough, in turn, tore up the field to get the equaliser.
