How to dress for success — part two

In last week’s column I stressed that a woman’s working wardrobe should give her confidence and contribute to her success in the workplace. Communication is 90 per cent non verbal (ie, body language and the tone of your voice ) and 10 per cent verbal. This means that the way your present yourself will have far more impact than what you actually say. This is why dressing accordingly is crucial in helping you achieving success.

I explained that there are three categories of career, and what type of clothing you should wear according to the message you wish to send. This week I will emphasise the corporate, law, banking, or finance sectors. I will share my tips and advice on making the right impression in the workplace.

As you need to appear authoritative and competent, you should wear skirts or trousers and classic dresses in high quality and subdued style and colours.

Dos

Buy good quality pieces in a shape and colour that suits you.

Skirts or dresses should be slightly above or below the knee.

Choose darker shades to convey more authority and use accessories with this season’s colours and styles to add interest to the look.

Choose classic designs that will not date, in neutral colours.

Be perfectly groomed; this includes personal hygiene, hair, and make-up.

Don’ts

Wear too much make up or fake tan.

Wear too much jewellery.

Wear anything too tight or revealing.

Choose flashy colours for suits.

Wear fabrics that wrinkle easily.

Wear uncomfortable shoes.

Your basic capsule wardrobe should contain good quality pieces that flatter your shape and colouring. Buy the best you can afford and seek advice on shape and colours. You will save money in the long run.
