The creators, producers, cast and crew of Playboy, The Musical are coming together for a reprise of the ever-popular, raucous and rollicking reworking of Synge’s classic play, adapted by Diarmuid de Faoite and Justin McCarthy.
This musical version of JM Synge’s The Playboy of the Western World is set in a radio studio in 1959 and includes a full cast, a live band and two foley artists creating hilarious live sound effects. Written by Diarmuid De Faoite and Justin McCarthy, with music by Justin McCarthy, the musical is a live version of their award-winning radio play broadcast by RTE.
The story surrounds a group of radio players and session musicians who gather to record The Playboy Of The Western World as a musical before a studio audience.
With the support of BAI and RTE it was broadcast as an RTE Drama on One in December 2015. It went on to win bronze at the New York Festivals World’s Best Radio Program Awards and is currently nominated for a PPI Award.
It was then further adapted as a live theatre performance and presented in An Taibhdhearc in Galway as a feature event in the Cúirt Festival in 2016. This sell-out stage debut met with an overwhelmingly positive audience reaction.
This is a modern reimagining of a classic Irish play. The storyline remains true to the original but is condensed through song and narrative to highlight the drama and wealth of language. The characters, in both spoken word and song, are reimagined as a mashup of modern musical icons.
The original music score evolves through the last 50 years of popular music, from country and western to heavy metal.
The cast for this special performance are Eoin Ó Dubhghaill, Eilis McCarthy, Helen Gregg, Fred McCloskey, Fia Rua, Aine Ni Droighnean, Philip Sweeney, Tracy Bruen, Jane Talbot and featuring special guest Rob Goodall as the narrator.
Playboy: The Musical can be seen at the Town Hall Theatre on August 29. This production is a fundraiser in support of Pete Nelson.
