Clybaun traffic calming works welcomed

Traffic calming works to begin on the Clybaun Road have been welcomed by city councillors Niall Mc Nelis and Donal Lyons.

Both have worked together on getting these works started and continue to engage with Gardai about speeding in the area.

Requests to have these works has been ongoing and following a number of near misses and very regular representations to the transport section of Galway City Council, both councillors have been informed that works are to start on August 15 and be finished by the time schools reopen.

Works will include a raised ramp of 2.5 meters wide; raised footpaths attached to a ramp will be put in place; and there will be a replacement of pelican lights.

“Lwr. Clybaun Road is a 50km stretch and the crossing is used by school children accessing both local schools St. John the Apostile and Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh, also it is an access crossing to local shops and access points,” said Cllr McNelis.

“Speeds of up to 70km regularly occur and a school warden was struck by a vehicle in the last six months,” he said.

The two councillors have met with Gardai about the illegal speed and dangerous reports and have sought regular speed checks in area.

Both Cllrs Mc Nelis and Lyons have thanked the Transport Department of Galway City Council and hope that along with this new crossing, the road will be safer for pedestrians crossing as well. The works are expected to cost in the region of €32,000 when completed.
