Staff, members and volunteers from Galway School Leaver Service IWA will be doing exactly that to raise vital funds for their school leavers service in Galway.

Wednesday August 30 is the date for the skydive which will see 22 fearless participants taking the big 14,000 ft plunge!

Susan Kelly, Service Support Officer, who is one of those taking part, said that there is a mixture of excitement and nerves amongst everyone.

“Most of our staff are doing the Skydive, two of our school leavers and a lot of family members. Some have done it before but others have never even been on a plane so it is a real mix.”

The school leaver service supports young adults with disabilities in a safe and supportive environment both within IWA community centres and in the local community. In 2019 the School Leaver Service began in Galway with three school leavers. In 2023, there are now have 24 school leavers.

This service runs in three different locations including Briarhill, Loughrea and Tuam. Susan said: “Each year, our services are growing and the money raised will help us to continue providing this excellent service in Galway.”

Operating five days a week activities provided include cooking, book club, arts and crafts, music and singing workshops, swimming, gym, Boccia, coaching for work / work experience, as well as preparation for courses / college while they also run evening activities and organise social weekend trips away.

School leaver Shane loves going to the IWA. “It brings a smile to my face. The gym keeps me fit. IWA has brought out the best side of me. I have met some amazing people and I enjoy their company.”

The School Leaver service support young adults to create a personalised service plan around their own goals and aspirations, this service identifies the programmes and supports that will assist them to achieve their own goals. Some of these goals include life skills development, recreation & social activities, employability, academic & accredited opportunities.

So far €16.5k has been raised and the group would be thrilled to hit their target of €17.5k with every euro raised going to the Galway service.
