1963 was an iconic year in the history of Galway — in those heady months, when JFK visited the city and inspired all with his speeches, a business was being created in the city that has gone on to similarly inspire thousands and thousands of young artists across the west.

There is something special about a store when it wants to bring out the artist inside you. Cregal Art is one such place. Surrounded by walls and shelves displaying myriad ways to be innovative and artistic, it is a place to be celebrated, given the role it has played in inspiring Galway children and adults for six decades.

To mark the occasion, a free Cregal Art 60th Anniversary Family Fun Day will be held at the premises on the Monivea Road (H91 VP7V ) from 10am to 4pm this Saturday, (July 29 ).

This week as the company marks those six decades of excellence, I met with current manager Mary Creavin-Ludden who has had a front row seat in the development of this 100% Irish owned wholesale and retail company.

"Over the years we have built a reputation based on providing competitive prices, quality goods and a prompt delivery service for art, crafts, design and picture framing supplies throughout Ireland," Mary told me in advance of their family fun day this weekend.

Along with her family, she has driven this successful business for all of its life, and has for a good portion of those 60 years, been a judge and sponsor of the annual Galway Advertiser Christmas Art Competition, itself iconic, with the overall winner having their work donning the Christmas week's cover of the newspaper.

With technology, you would think that creativity would be threatened, but on the contrary, the legend of Cregal Art has not been diminished. Indeed, it has spread far and wide and they deliver all over the country. During lockdown, the Cregal Art creativity packages were welcome in thousands of homes across the country, a ray of splendid colours in a world of grey.

Just walking through the doors never prepares oneself fully for the total immersion into a world of art and creativity that you get when you visit Cregal Art and it is that magic that sustains it.

Established in 1963 by Marie and Paddy Creavin, the family-run business has grown to become a haven for artists, hobbyists, and students across the country.

With the capable leadership of Paddy's daughter, Mary Creavin-Ludden, working closely with her family and team, Cregal Art continues to thrive, providing an extensive range of art and craft supplies and services such as picture framing and art classes to fuel creativity in the west of Ireland.

Through its sponsorships and partnerships, Cregal Art has also played a key role in supporting and fostering the arts in Galway city, country and further afield, through sponsoring prizes for various art competitions such as its long running association with the iconic Galway Advertiser Christmas Art competition and various school art prizes over the years.

A haven for creativity in the West of Ireland

While much is made of Galway's cultural currency, it is Cregal Art which has played a key role in supporting the arts in Galway. It proudly stands as the largest retail art and craft shop in the region. Stepping into its welcoming space, one is immediately captivated by the sheer variety of artistic materials on offer.

Whether you are an aspiring painter, a lover of drawing, skilled calligrapher, pottery enthusiast, or into various crafts, Cregal Art caters to all creative passions.

With aisles lined with paints, brushes, canvases, sketchbooks, markers, and much more, artists and hobbyists alike will find a treasure trove of inspiration.

The store's warm ambiance and the friendly and knowledgeable team make every visit to the store a delightful experience, whether you're a seasoned artist seeking specific supplies or a curious beginner looking to explore various mediums.
