500 pairs of specially commissioned Saw Doctors socks will go on sale this Friday July 21 at the band’s sold out gig in the Heineken Big Top at the Fisheries Field, Galway with all proceeds going to the Galway Rape Crisis Centre.
The gesture comes following a donation of the customised socks by the Tuam band and a decision by the Galway International Arts Festival to waive their commission on sales of the socks at the festival's merchandising stall.
The colourful socks, resplendent with drawings of a Red Cortina car and the old N17 road sign, have been designed by the Irish Socksociety, who are based in Liosbán Estate on the Tuam Road, Galway and will retail for €15 a pair at the Arts Festival merchandise stall on Friday July 21 and Saturday July 29 when The Saw Doctors will play two sold out gigs in the Heineken Big Top.
“Galway Rape Crisis Centre would like to thank The Saw Doctors for donating 500 pairs of socks and Galway International Arts Festival for waiving their sales commission on the socks" said Susan Costello, Head of Development & Marketing at Galway Rape Crisis Centre.
"This is a novel fundraising project that has the potential to raise €7,500 for the Galway Rape Crisis Centre”.
The Saw Doctors, who are on a ‘comeback’ tour after a five year absence, recently played Glastonbury Festival, sold out shows in New York and Boston and headlined a huge outdoor concert at Castlefield Bowl in the centre of Manchester, playing to 8,000 people.
Next month The Saw Doctors will play two hometown gigs, billed ’The West’s Awake’, in St. Jarlath’s College, Tuam, Co. Galway.
