When you walk into your bedroom after a long and challenging day, does the sight that greets your eyes lift your heart?
Is your room an oasis of tranquillity, a restful haven, a place where you can unwind and recharge your batteries? If it is, lucky you! You are destined to have relaxing nights and sweet dreams.
However, if you are like many people, your bedroom may fall short on all the above fronts. A worst case scenario is that you find it difficult to navigate your way to your bed as the floor is strewn with clothes, shoes, make-up bags, magazines, books, and last night’s takeaway dinner. While you are not a hopeless case and are not hoarder next-door material, there is a good chance that the only dreams you will have in that room are nightmares.
Maybe you are messy and fail to hang up your clothes or put away your jumpers or suits, but, in a crisis, you could do a rapid clean-up to save your blushes if there was a danger of anyone venturing inside your door. Again, this kind of bedroom does not lend itself to serenity or slumber.
If you are keen to achieve high quality sleep, relaxation, and restfulness and reduce everyday stress, then one of the easiest things you can do is make your sleeping space cleaner and more organised. The good news is that with a little time and effort you can achieve this and will reap the benefits.
So, where do you start and are there shortcuts to success? The secret is to divide your chore list into quick, efficient tasks. That way, you will not be overwhelmed by the scale of the project and you will cover all the basics.
Here are some tips to get you started
Start by removing everyday rubbish. Get a small wastebasket, if you do not have one already. This is ideal for small bits of trash and will help you keep your room clean.
Sort through clothes items that need to be put away. Maybe they are resting on a chair or carpeting the floor, if so, return them to their rightful place. Some may need to go on in a laundry basket, others should be hung up in your wardrobe, or folded away in a drawer. Make sure to hang blouses and dresses or suits facing the same direction. This will make choosing outfits in the morning easier as you go through your clothes.
Focus on one area at a time. Be sure to finish the matter at hand before you move on to the next section. Otherwise you will end up with parts of the room tidy and the rest a mess. If you are facing into a major task, break it down into manageable segments. That way, it will not appear so daunting. Set yourself a target of clearing one corner of your bedroom, for example, one evening or tidying out a drawer for an hour or two at the weekend. Choose a time when you feel energetic and motivated and you know you will not be interrupted. Some people prefer to start early in the day when their energy levels are high and they have natural light in which to work.
Set a deadline. This is important to keep you focused and to remind you that there is an end in sight if you can feel you are not making headway. Sometimes, it may be best in work in short, sharp bursts. That way, you can give it your all in the knowledge that you can soon return to something more pleasurable.
