To celebrate the highly anticipated release of Barbie on July 21, Pálás are paying tribute to Greta Gerwig, and her particular brand of awkward. Greta Gerwig: The Art of Awkward will showcase her work both in front of and behind the camera. From the charming Frances Ha to the heart-warming Little Women, Gerwig weaves a rich tapestry in all she puts her hand to.
William Fitzgerald, Pálás Programmer commented on curating the season: “Watching a Greta Gerwig film can often feel like spending time with your best friend – there’s a relatable-ness and ease to her writing, directing and acting that makes it seem effortless. Her characters are familiar, determined but often lost, ambitious but unfettered as they take us on a journey with them. We cannot wait to see the world she has created for Barbie on our screens, and hope audiences enjoy this chance to delve into how she mastered her craft.”
The films that will feature in this season from July 1 – 19 include Frances Ha, Maggie's Plan, Isle of Dogs, Lady Bird, Mistress America, Little Women and 20th Century Women.
Don’t be fooled by the effortless humour and warmth Gerwig brings to the screen - each hesitation is meticulously crafted, each stumble is part of the process. This is the art of being awkward and it's why we love her.
Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and Nicola Coughlan, opens in Pálás on July 21.
Designer Conor Merriman has brought this season to life through specially commissioned artwork.
