An “out of control” teenager who was found breaking into cars, swinging a metal pipe in public, and obsructing gardai has been placed in detention for a total of 19 months.

Andrew O’Hagan (19 ) with an address at 83 Hazel Park, Newcastle, and 33 Crescent View, Riverside, appeared at Galway District Court last Monday charged with being intoxicated in a public place and obstruction of a garda at Ballinfoyle Park on November 16, 2008, threatening and abusive at Eyre Square on February 28, 2009, theft at Sally Longs, 33 Abbeygate Street, on March 10, 2009, possession of a pipe and threatening and abusive behaviour at Eglinton Street on March 27, 2009, and the unauthorised taking and interference of an MPV, theft, and criminal damage at Bru Na Mara, Salthill on April 26, 2009.

Inspector Sean Glynn told the court that on March 10, 2009, the defendant had been found in possession of a keg of beer which had been stolen earlier from Sally Longs pub in Abbeygate Street. On March 27, 2009, at 2.05am the defendant was seen on Eglinton Street “swinging a pipe wildly” in an area where people were coming out of night clubs. O’Hagan was identified by CCTV footage and when searched by gardai a “length of metal piping was found down the side of his trousers”.

On April 26, 2009, witness had seen two males, one the defendant, interfering with vehicles at Bru Na Mara, Salthill. The window of one car had been broken and CDs were taken out of it.

O’Hagan had also been stopped at Ballinfoyle Park along with two other males on November 16, 2008, following a public order incident nearby. Diffificulties arose as gardai were attempting to secure a knife (not found on the defendant ) in a patrol car but were obtructed by O’Hagan and another individual.

“It seems he is completely out of control,” said Judge Mary Fahy, who then convicted and sentenced O’Hagan to a total of 19 months detention.
