Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris has today announced that the green light has been given to the Mountbellew campus of the Atlantic Technological University to proceed to the next stage in its application for the delivery of veterinary education.
Mountbellew was chosen by the Higher Education Authority to have a viable proposal to deliver additional veterinary education.
Speaking today, Minister Harris said: “I am delighted that ATU Mountbellew has been successful in its proposal regarding the expansion of healthcare places. This is a major day for Mountbellew and for East Galway and is real vote of confidence in the team at ATU Mountbellew and their capacity to expand educational provision in our region.
“This project will now proceed to the next phase which is the formulation of a full business case which will then be assessed by the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform.
“But this is serious progress. We now have concrete places to increase healthcare education, particularly outside of our larger cities. This won’t happen overnight but it is a significant moment to be celebrated.”
Deputy Ciaran Cannon said this is great news for the people of Mountbellew and East Galway.
“I am delighted to be working closely with my colleague, the Minister for Further and Higher education on our plans to develop these expanded places.
“ATU Mountbellew has a long and proud tradition of delivering education in the agricultural sphere. This proposed addition of veterinary medicine will be a truly groundbreaking development. I will continue to work with Minister Harris to make this project a reality.”
