The family of Dr Karen Guinee have set up a fundraiser in her memory with proceeds in aid of Advocates from Victims of Homicide (ADVIC ).
Dr Guinee, a native of Douglas, Co Cork, was just one week away from graduating from her medical degree at University of Galway and a week from her 24th birthday when she was murdered in her home on Father Griffin Avenue by Patrick (Pa ) Hogan on the early hours in of June 12, 2006. It was a case that shook the nation, the life of a young woman on the cusp of her career as a doctor which was cut short at the hands of a man she was in a relationship with in the apartment they shared.
Following Hogan's sentencing, Dr Guinee's family described her as a "loving and caring" person who would have been a remarkable doctor as well as being an "idol and a role model" to her younger sisters. With the 17th anniversary of her death taking place on Monday, June 12, Dr Guinee's two younger sisters, Julie and Laura have set up a GoFundMe in her honour with all the funds going towards ADVIC, a voluntary organisation that has helped them "immensely over the years."
ADVIC is a voluntary organisation that aids the families of homicide victims through counselling and support networks as well as legal advice and information on how to navigate the Irish criminal justice system. As well as supporting families of homicide victims, ADVIC also advocates for changes to the Irish criminal justice system, a system they have found to 'lack fairness and balance, and within which the families of homicide victims have no status'.
As well as deepening the resources of ADVIC, the GoFundMe also helps to keep the memory of Dr Guinee, a woman who should be turning 41 this month, in our minds and hearts.
Any small donation is welcome. The fundraiser can be found by searching 'In Karen's Memory' on GoFundMe.com or by clicking here
