Galway City West and Knocknacarra Councillor Donal Lyons continues to lobby the council to take responsibility for a laneway which requires maintenance.
Cllr Lyons has received on-going representations from the Monalee Heights Residents' Association and the Ros Ard Residents' Association in relation to carrying out maintenance to the laneway which links the Ballymoneen Road to the Ros Ard estate.
"Over the years, following representations, I had maintenance works carried out on the laneway, including the installation of an additional public light, the removal of a pillar to the rear of Monalee Heights, and maintenance works which would allow bicycles, prams and push chairs access the lane," he says.
However, having made further representations on behalf of the local residents, he discovered the laneway, which is adjacent to the grounds of St John the Apostle Church and the Monalee Heights estate, was not taken in charge by Galway City Council and as a result, no further maintenance works would be undertaken.
Although submitting a Notice of Motion requesting the Galway City Council to immediately begin the process of taking responsibility for the laneway, Cllr Lyons was "most unhappy" with the council's response, which said the request would be "reviewed".
"I was most unhappy with the reply and I re-submitted the Notice of Motion which I tabled at a recent meeting of the council. The Notice of Motion was passed unanimously by the members of the council," he says.
Cllr Lyons says the director of services now has agreed to bring a report at the Galway City Council July meeting.
"I am hoping that the report when presented will give a timeframe as to when the lane can be taken-in-charge, so that the maintenance required on the laneway can be facilitated."
