Are you up at the crack of dawn? Galway Simon Community will be up before sunrise this summer solstice for their Dip at Dawn at 4.30am on Wednesday June 21, at Salthill Beach.

You are invited to join them for some gentle yoga, followed by a dip in the sea to raise both awareness and funds for those facing homelessness in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon. A spectacular flotilla of Galway Hookers will also be out in the bay to illuminate this unique experience.

Participants will be led in a rejuvenating yoga session, on what is also the International Day of Yoga, by the amazing team at SoulMoves. The yoga involves gentle, mindful movements that are suitable for beginners and people of all ages and abilities.

Into the BLUE Aquatic Wellbeing will be on hand to lead an invigorating dip in the sea, whilst DJ GiGi from kidisco.ie, rocks the decks with the very best summer anthems. The one and only Barista Bus will have hot beverages at the ready to warm participants after the swim. Gym+Coffee are also supporting this unique event and the first 200 people to register will receive a Gym+Coffee Dip at Dawn baseball cap.

“The summer solstice reminds us that there is hope and that the light within can nurture and inspire others, just as the sun nurtures and inspires us. The Galway Simon Dip at Dawn, is a wonderful event that cultivates a sense of health and well-being and brings together a community who care deeply about the homeless and housing crisis here in the West”, says Larragh Cunningham.

With the growing homelessness crisis in the West, the local charity is encouraging people to get involved in this year’s event and help raise vital funds and make a difference.

Fintan Maher of Galway Simon explained how participating in the Dip at Dawn can help to make a difference in the lives of those facing homelessness locally.

“Between January and December 2022, Galway Simon supported 810 unique households, including 225 families and 476 children. The wonderful support we have received has meant that over the last two years, more than 90% of households who engaged with our Prevention Services avoided having to access Emergency Accommodation,” he said.

“If we can prevent people from having to access Emergency Accommodation in hostels, B&Bs and hotels, the outcomes are so much better – adults and children do not have to experience the stress and trauma of homelessness. That is why we are asking people to take action to help people in our community and the Dip at Dawn is the perfect way to do this”, Mr Maher said.

“By taking part in the Dip at Dawn and joining others in our community to welcome the summer solstice you are helping us to raise vital funds to support people in our local community who may have no place to call home or are facing the fear of homelessness. We are asking people to take a short time out of their morning and take part in a fun event, to help others”, Fintan added.
