Portugal’s best kept secret

Just back from a visit with the Portuguese Tourist Board, Maura Fahy of Fahy Travel has found an exciting destination for those looking to explore somewhere new.

Alentejo, Portugal’s largest region, is situated between Lisbon and the Algarve. With its vineyards, olive groves, cork trees, fine wines and renowned gastronomy, it makes a lovely few days with a Lisbon city break. If you prefer to spend more time exploring, stay at one of the many vineyards, try a day’s grape picking in season, or just sample the fine wines and enjoy the spectacular scenery of the surrounding region. For the wine enthusiasts, visit the Geradoes de Talha where organic wine is made in clay pots using a totally natural process introduced by the Romans. Sample the wine with a delicious lunch prepared by your hosts.

Évora is the main town in the heart of Alentejo, 80 miles from Lisbon. It can be visited on a day trip from the city or, if you have the time, is well worth a night or two. The historical town centre features a World Heritage Site with Roman ruins, Gothic churches and megalithic dolmens. The region also features several hilltop villages with castles, local museums, cafes and craft shops. Previously offering protection from Spanish invaders, they now offer a window to the past and spectacular views over the countryside.
