Galway’s African Community embrace all cultures to celebrate Africa Day 2023

The two day event taking place on May 25 and 27, plans to celebrate the world’s ‘mother continent’ through educational talks, vibrant festivities and family friendly activities.

The theme for this Africa Day Galway 2023 is ‘strength in diversity’ with organisers Africa United Galway in collaboration with Shining Light Galway creating a festival that incorporates local groups and organisers as well as community groups across the city and county. The festival is sponsored by Irish Aid and is supported by Galway City Council.

Kicking off the event on Thursday, May 25 will be an evening of enlightenment with a symposium looking into the rich tapestry of African culture with engaging and thought-provoking discussions creating a display that highlights the power of diversity and collaboration. The gathering of brilliant minds will inspire and educate, leaving participants with a fresh perspective on diversity. The symposium will take place between 5pm to 7:30pm in the ILAS Building, University of Galway.

The second instalment of the festival takes place on Saturday, May 27, will see a day of cultural celebration taking place in Salthill Car Park between 12 noon and 6pm. The Mayor of Galway, Cllr Clodagh Higgins, will officially open Africa Day Galway 2023 with a keynote speech and several diverse cultures are expected to be present on the day for a display that highlights the culture, beauty and strength of Africa and support for its people.

A day full of pulsating rhythms of Africa, authentic music, dance, art, and cuisine from across the continent of Africa which will include migrant cuisines and halal options. Featuring shows by performers from near and wide, the energetic event will be jam packed with stalls, interactive displays and music.

In the spirit of inclusion and intergration, there will be a feature presentation by Hession School of Irish Dance who will be presenting the famous Riverdance, alongside performances by Galway based Ukrainian and Pakistani groups and zumba and salsa dances which represent the vibrant and diverse population of Galway. Galway’s own, TG4, will be televising the event.

In the spirit of diversity, there will be a football friendly with Gardai organised by Shinning Light Galway, at 4pm on Tuesday, May 23 at Cappagh Park, Knocknacarra. Are welcome to attend.
