There are many milestones being achieved by Phil Trill's trailblazing Galway women in their debut season, and now they travel to Peamount United on Saturday where victory could take them top of the table at the halfway point of the season.
When they take the field in Newcastle at 5pm, they will have a vocal backing as the Galway United Football Club Co-op is organising a supporters' bus - a first for a women's game.
The squad has been gaining admirers near and far for its performances this season. Perhaps the greatest example was the award received by teenage star Jenna Slattery, who was crowned the League's Player of the Month for April.
It was a deserved endorsement for Slattery, who has been consistently excellent this season. In tandem with Gemma McGuinness, she particularly starred in the victories over Sligo Rovers and DLR Waves in April.
In accepting the auspicious award, Slattery said it was a great honour. "I wouldn't have been able to do it without my teammates and the staff behind us. Each week we are pushing each other in training and that's what helped me win this award."
Last week United had a week off which may have been unfortunate timing given they had been unbeaten in six and had won their previous three outings.
The sides around them all capitalised on their absence, with Shamrock Rovers, Shelbourne and Peamount all recording victories. The four sides all lie within three points at the top of the table.
Since a heavy defeat at home to Shels, Peamount themselves have been in a rich vein of form accumulating 10 points out of a possible 12. They have been driven by exceptional performances from Kate Mooney, Jess Fitzgerald and Karen Duggan.
Their form to date has been a remarkable feat for a team plundered in the off-season by Shamrock Rovers and others. Their resilience was on display again last week again when they won away to Treaty United despite playing most of the game with 10 players.
As United have displayed time and again this season, they will not be overawed by the occasion or the opposition. Their performances and results away to Shels and Athlone Town should provide the confidence and belief to a side with its sights firmly upwards.
